Each year, The School of The New York Times encourages students to participate in our annual Photojournalism Challenge on Instagram by sharing photos from their time in New York City and Washington DC. We ask The New York Times to review hundreds of entries and select two grand prize winners — one from NYC and one from DC — whose photos will be featured in a nationwide print edition of The New York Times.
This year, Beth Flynn, The New York Times Deputy Photo Editor, selected Ericka Mickelson and Maisie Rochat as the grand prize winners of our 2019 Summer Academy Photojournalism Challenge.

Maisie’s image has lovely light and shapes. She took care to catch bits of each flag in the foreground and background, and the shapes of the fence add a layered complexity to the image.
